Red-List Nations

EUROPE

Europe is generally considered one of the safest regions in the world, with many countries boasting low crime rates, stable governments, and high standards of living. However, there are still some countries where travelers may encounter higher levels of risk due to factors such as crime, political instability, terrorism, and social unrest. Here's a list of some European countries that are often considered among the most dangerous:

DO NOT TRAVEL:

Ukraine: The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, centered around the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, has led to violence, displacement, and instability. Additionally, travelers should exercise caution in Crimea due to the annexation by Russia.

Russia: While much of Russia is relatively safe for tourists, certain regions, particularly in the North Caucasus (e.g., Chechnya, Dagestan) and areas near the borders with Ukraine and Georgia, face security risks due to terrorism, insurgency, and political tensions.

Belarus: While generally safe for tourists, Belarus has faced political unrest and repression, particularly following the disputed presidential election in 2020. The government's response to protests has led to arrests and violence, and travelers should exercise caution, particularly during periods of heightened political tension.

RECONSIDER TRAVEL / EXERCISE HIGH DEGREE OF CAUTION:

Kosovo: Ongoing tensions with Serbia near the northern border areas. Exercise increased caution due to the potential for politically motivated violence.

Moldova: Political protests occur often in Moldova. There is a volatile security situation and the impacts of military conflict in neighbouring Ukraine can easily spill into the Russian-backed Transnistria region and other regions of the country.

Turkey: Turkey faces security challenges including terrorism, political unrest, and occasional violence. Travelers should exercise caution, particularly in southeastern Turkey and areas near the Syrian border.

It's important to note that while these countries may face security challenges, they also have many safe and enjoyable areas for travelers. However, travelers should exercise caution, stay informed about local conditions, and take appropriate safety precautions when visiting any destination with security risks. Additionally, travel advisories issued by governments and international organizations can provide valuable information for travelers.
